PSV-A-9 Reduction of Salmonella Reading Using a Dairy-Originated Probiotic Bacterium, Propionibacterium Freudenreichii in Combination with a Live Attenuated Salmonella Typhimurium Vaccine in Growing Turkeys

Abstract The emergence of unusual foodborne outbreak-causing Salmonella Reading (SR) in turkey production warrants rapid control measures. objective the study was to prevent cecal colonization and internal organ dissemination SR growing turkeys using a dairy-originated probiotic bacterium Propionibacterium freudenreichii (PF), live attenuated Typhimurium vaccine (VC; AviPro Megan Egg), or their combination (PF+VC). In each experiment, 30, day-old poults were allocated into five groups: negative (NC), (SC), VC, PF, PF+VC. Poults VC PF+VC vaccinated as per recommendations. PF supplemented with 5 log10 CFU/ml through drinking water until sample collection. All except NC group inoculated CFU/mL SR. Seven days after inoculation, ceca, crop, liver, spleen collected for enumeration enrichment. Homogenized samples diluted plated on Xylose Lysine Deoxycholate (XLD) agar, plates incubated at 37oC 24 hours. Liver, spleen, crop enriched selenite cysteine broth streaked XLD identification Each had 6 groups experiment (30 turkeys). repeated 3 times (N=90). Data analyzed PROC-MIXED procedure SAS, significance detected P< 0.05. treatments effective reducing turkeys. Compared PC (4.0 CFU/g), reduced by >3 CFU/g, alone resulted 1.7 CFU/g reduction (P< 0.05). better than independent preventing liver survival. Results indicate that P. S. effectively protect against emerging (USDA NIFA Food Safety & Defense #2020-67017-30787).
